Culture and the arts flourished during the Song Dynasty in China. Literati gathered to practice the arts and compete with one another. Eight pastimes were considered the most elegant, called 八雅 bā yǎ (“Eight Elegances”).

诗 shī – poetry

酒 jiǔ – wine

花 huā – flowers

茶 chá – tea
